Silver Casting: A Tried and True Way to Create High-Quality Reproductions of Jewelry
For many years, the silver casting process has allowed jewelers and jewelry stores to take designs that are only drawn or created with CAD software and turn them into actual pieces of jewelry.
Working from these custom designs, Casting House sees your custom jewelry through every step of the silver casting process:
- Wax model and casting preparation. Based on the design, a wax model is carved or printed. This is attached to a wax stem either by itself or with other models by sprues. These form the channels through which the molten silver will flow into the mold.
- Investment. The wax models, attached to the stem, are placed into a special frame called a flask, which is then filled with an investment material that is allowed to harden.
- Burnout. After the investment material has set and hardened, the flask is placed in a special kiln to burn away the wax inside of it. When all of the wax is melted and burned away, the cavity, which is the mold, is left.
- Melting. Depending on the type of silver and what type of alloy is being used, the silver is melted at very high temperatures, beginning at 1,615 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Casting. Liquid silver can be poured directly into a mold, but there are various techniques — including centrifugal casting, vacuum-assisted casting and pressure casting — that can be used to ensure the metal is evenly distributed and reaches every spot in the mold. Casting House employs all of these techniques as well as torch casting, which utilizes a torch to melt a very small amount of metal that is poured into the mold.
- Divesting. After the silver cools and solidifies, the castings are removed from the investment material, either through physical means or by use of chemicals. The sprue is cut off each casting, and each piece is cleaned and polished to remove imperfections.
